Because who wants to meal plan for their toddler and THEN figure out all of their own meals too? Not me!

Why Variety Matters for Toddlers

Variety is key when planning meals for toddlers (and for you too!). Because wouldn’t you get bored eating the same foods day in and day out?

Feeding your child a broad range of foods not only helps prevent picky eating but also supports their development by ensuring they get a balanced intake of essential nutrients. It helps even more when we’re offering foods in a positive eating environment.

From proteins and healthy fats to vitamins and minerals, each meal can be an opportunity to nourish your toddlerโ€™s growing body and brain. Plus, offering different textures and colors can make meals more exciting for little ones, encouraging them to try new things.

But meal planning for toddlers doesnโ€™t have to be stressful. The ideas above are flexible, allowing you to adapt ingredients to suit your familyโ€™s preferences or dietary needs.

Got More Toddler Meal Ideas?

Is this list inspiring you to add some ideas of your own to it? There are a few ways I suggest going about doing it and FYI a meal idea list is one of the biggest fundamental habits to stress-free meal planning.

The Food Group Way

Start by listing out the five food groups (fat/dairy, vegetables, fruits, protein (plant/animal), grains) and then write down every single food you can possibly think of under each category. You can list foods you like/know your kids like or just list all of the foods you can think of.

Take these lists and start pairing together at least three food groups for a “meal” idea and at least two food groups for a “snack” idea. These ideas will be balanced and even more personalized to yours and your kid’s preferences.

Use Your Inventory

While this can go hand-in-hand with the above method, it’s also a way to generate ideas using food you already have on hand. Got pretzels and hummus? Write it down for this week’s snack idea list.

Found some crackers, cheese, and olives? Write it down! Every week when I meal plan, I not only lay out my dinners, lunches and potential breakfast options but I also write out a few snack ideas.

When you do this, you’re much less likely to forget about food in your cupboards and waste it. Then when you’re out, you can refer to this robust list of meals/snacks and add them to your grocery list.

Meal Planning For Your Toddler

Here’s the thing, lists like these are a great START. But planning and figuring out how to rotate in foods is still a skill you’ll need to practice. I highly recommend reading through some of my busy parent meal planning guides and hopping on my email list.

There’s already a lot of things to stress and worry about in life, so let’s make sure food is no longer one of them.
